Abstract:
This ArcGIS Server map service shows data collected for the Yellowstone River Cumulative Effects Analysis, including the channel migration zone (CMZ), historic locations of the river channel, man-made features that impact the flow of the river, river miles, and aerial photographs of the river made betwen 1948 and 1955. It also shows the river reaches designated for the analysis.

The Yellowstone River Conservation Districts council web page for access to these and other GIS data sets for the Yellowstone River is http://geoinfo.msl.mt.gov/data/yellowstone_river.

Links to detailed metadata for each data set are in the Source Information section of this document.
Purpose:
These data were created as part of a joint cumulative effects study of the Yellowstone River led by the Yellowstone River Conservation Districts Council and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The multi-agency interdisciplinary planning study extends from Park County, Montana to the Missouri River confluence in McKenzie County, North Dakota. The data are specifically intended to support the hydraulic, geomorphic, biologic and socioeconomic analyses that are part of the planning study.

Source contribution:
The river mile locations were derived from the "fl_1999_2001_route_primary" layer in this database. This is the stream centerline digitized from aerial photos and the river mile locations are based on their distance along this line from the confluence of the Yellowstone with the Missouri.

The layer is included in the historic banks flowlines dataset.

These regions are used to define changes in river channel characteristics based on geomorphic parameters. The reach breaks reflect changes in the channel form captured by color infrared imagery of 2001, but re-assesed as banklines and flowlines of the river were digitized from aerial photos of 1950, 1976, and 1995.

The break lines at the river channel were extended to split a 5-mile buffer around the river.
